5 stages of spiritual growth

Spiritual growth often mirrors the pattern of human development. As people follow Jesus, they move through stages that reflect increasing levels of belief, responsibility, and influence. The goal of discipleship is not simply spiritual knowledge or church participation. The goal is spiritual reproduction—helping people grow until they are helping others follow Jesus. The journey of spiritual growth typically moves through five stages:

Unborn → Child → Teenager → Adult → Parent

Each stage represents a new level of spiritual responsibility.

STAGE 1 | UNBORN: EXPLORING FAITH

STAGE 1 | UNBORN: EXPLORING FAITH

“Unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” - John 3:3

• They have not yet trusted Jesus and are still exploring what they believe about God.

• Faith is mostly curiosity and questions rather than commitment.

• Church is a place they visit or investigate rather than a place they belong.

• They typically observe spiritual practices rather than personally participating in them.

• Generosity toward God’s Kingdom is not yet part of their thinking or lifestyle.

• They usually observe service happening around them rather than actively serving

KEY STEP FOR GROWTH → TRUST JESUS

A person moves from spiritual death to spiritual life when they repent of sin and place their faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

This is the moment of spiritual birth that begins the journey of discipleship.

_______

STAGE 2 | CHILD: LEARNING THE FAITH

STAGE 2 | CHILD: LEARNING THE FAITH

“Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation.” - 1 Peter 2:2

• They have trusted Jesus but are new to following Him and depend heavily on others for guidance.

• Faith is primarily shaped by what they are taught rather than what they pursue themselves.

• Church is a place where they receive teaching, encouragement, and care.

• Spiritual growth happens mainly through environments like worship gatherings, Life Groups, and basic discipleship.

• Generosity often begins here through occasional or spontaneous giving (“pocket giving”).

• They begin serving in simple, low-responsibility roles while discovering their gifts.

KEY STEP FOR GROWTH→ ENGAGE PERSONALLY

Spiritual children grow when they begin personally engaging their faith through Scripture, prayer, and obedience rather than relying entirely on others for spiritual nourishment.

This stage introduces the discipline of personal spiritual habits.

_______

STAGE 3 | TEEN: WRESTLING WITH FAITH

STAGE 3 | TEEN: WRESTLING WITH FAITH

“Though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles… You need milk, not solid food.” - Hebrews 5:12-14

• Their faith is real, but they are still deciding how much of their life Jesus will truly lead.

• This stage is often marked by questions, inconsistency, and spiritual independence.

• Church involvement often depends on convenience, preference, or personal benefit.

• Their spiritual habits may be inconsistent as they wrestle with obedience and priorities.

• Generosity often becomes more consistent (“planned giving”) but may not yet be sacrificial.

• They may begin taking on greater responsibility in ministry roles but still see church primarily as something that serves them.

KEY STEP FOR GROWTH→ TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

Spiritual teenagers become spiritual adults when they stop relying on others for their spiritual development and begin taking ownership of their spiritual growth.

This shift includes:

• consistent spiritual disciplines

• faithful service

• intentional generosity

• obedience to God’s Word

_______

STAGE 4 | ADULT: OWNING FAITH

STAGE 4 | ADULT: OWNING FAITH

“Solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.” - Ephesians 4:13

• They take responsibility for their own spiritual health through Scripture, prayer, and obedience.

• Faith shapes their decisions, priorities, relationships, and lifestyle.

• Church is a place where they actively serve and contribute to the mission.

• They pursue spiritual maturity and desire to grow in Christlikeness.

• Generosity becomes disciplined and systematic, often expressed through consistent percentage giving.

• They serve faithfully in meaningful ministry roles and help strengthen the church’s mission.

KEY STEP FOR GROWTH→ INVEST IN OTHERS

Spiritual adults become spiritual parents when they intentionally begin helping others grow in their faith.

This may include:

• mentoring a younger believer

• leading a Life Group

• discipling new Christians

• sharing the gospel intentionally

_______

STAGE 5 | PARENT: MULTIPLYING FAITH

STAGE 5 | PARENT: MULTIPLYING FAITH

“What you have heard from me… entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” - 2 Timothy 2:2

• Spiritual parents intentionally invest in the spiritual growth of others.

• Their focus shifts from personal growth to multiplication and disciple-making.

• Church is a mission they help advance rather than simply a community they attend.

• Their spiritual maturity produces influence, leadership, and spiritual fruit in others.

• Generosity becomes priority-driven and sacrificial as they steward their life for God’s Kingdom.

• They mentor believers, develop leaders, and help raise the next generation of disciples.

KEY STEP FOR GROWTH→ REPRODUCE DISCIPLES

Spiritual parents multiply their faith by intentionally helping others follow Jesus and eventually helping them do the same for others.

This is the stage where the mission of discipleship becomes self-replicating.
